LAC Contact Improv Jam
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Living Arts Collective jams seek to create a SAFE, FRIENDLY, and CONSCIOUS container for exploring Contact Improvisation through open jamming.
Toni Craige, Aubrey & Bru Roze will be hosting the space. There will be a bit of extra emphasis on orienting folks to our jamming culture through discussion in the opening and closing circle and through the content of the beginner lab. The bulk of the event is for free play and jamming without formal instruction. Some jams will be included in a contact improvisation class series, though, will still be open to others with a limited number of spots. Not all jams will be beginner friendly with an opening lab. Sound will vary ~ some jams will be without music, some may have a bit of ambient recorded music, and occasionally, we may invite some musicians to jam with us. We will post our sound plans the day of the jam on Facebook. See the details upon online registration which is always recommended and often required.
All levels are welcome. Beginners are strongly encouraged to attend the Lab at 6:30. Informal labbing and peer-to-peer teaching is welcome (with consent) at the jam.
Beginner-Friendly CI Lab (on occasion)
Space opens at 6:15
Lab 6:30-7pm
The Free Labs are guided by a rotating cast of advanced CI dancers in our community. Dancers of any level are welcome to drop in, and we especially hope that beginners and those newer to the form will attend. The teacher will provide mentoring and instruction in CI techniques as well as answer questions to orient beginners to our LAC jamming culture.
CI Jams with Live Improvised Music and Guided Warm-ups
Each jam will have its own unique flavor, with accompaniment by different musicians and warm-ups by different teachers. Jams are woven into and included in our class series, or are open to drop-ins from those not registered for the series.
Sliding Scale $20/30/40 (can be included in class series)
Simple Jams
No guided warm-up or music, just a space dance and create beauty together.
Sliding Scale $10/15/20 (can be included in a class series makeup)
Jamming
Space opens at 7:00
Informal warm-up 7:00-7:15
Opening circle at 7:15
Jams will usually be held at the Shared Visions Retreat (Old Murphy School), but some may be at the LAC downtown (Arthur Murray) space.
Raleigh Ecstatic Dance
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

The dance wave is a form of ecstatic dance characterized as 90 minutes of speechless improvisational dance based somewhat on the 5 Rhythms Ecstatic Dance concept of Gabrielle Roth. This can be either solo dancing, partner dancing, contact improvisation, or ad lib group. The experience can be meditative or spiritually oriented for some individuals. Dancers of all ages are welcome and there typically is no talking during the dance. Dance opening circle begins somewhere between 6:30 to 7:30 PM depending upon the location and time of year. Donations of $5-20 recommended, but usually not required. No one will be refused for lack of funds. Funds go towards the costs of holding weekly dances, a contact improvisation scholarship fund, or charitable donations rather than the volunteer organizers. Dance occurs at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh (usually Clara Barton Room, sometimes Founders Hall). Dance sometimes occurs outdoors at Pullen Park (across the street from the aquatic center), Raleigh Rose Garden, Wooten Meadow Park, Dorothea Dix Park (Big Field or Spring Hill Park & Ride), or other outdoor locations. Dance sometimes occurs on Fridays (usually at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh Main Sanctuary) instead of Thursdays. Dance when outdoors is weather dependent, but will usually occur during light rain. This event listing will often be updated a few days before to reflect the location and opening circle time as information becomes available. See Raleigh Ecstatic Dance Facebook group on the event day for latest information on exact location and times since they can change last minute.
