Spring and Fall music and dance festival in Chatham County with multiple bands and genres. There are a few bands geared to partner dancing and there are several dance workshops in swing, salsa, and zydeco in the Dance Tent. Donna and the Buffalo play Zydeco. Onyx club boys do gypsy jazz swing. There is an ecstatic dance dancewave and a contact improvisation workshop. Other bands include string bands, international, Americana, jazz and many varieties. For those who are hopeless without GPS and find themselves panicked because you can’t get a cell signal to map your way home late at night on the country roads. Just remember “RRLRL” which for a dance follow is a hop on the right foot and a triple step. Right out of the lot, right onto Emerson Cook (just remember Einstein’s E=MC squared, 2 O’s), left at end, right onto Hwy 87, and depending upon your destination left onto 64E. Just dance your way home!

The dance wave is a form of ecstatic dance characterized as 90 minutes of speechless improvisational dance based somewhat on the 5 Rhythms Ecstatic Dance concept of Gabrielle Roth. This can be either solo dancing, partner dancing, contact improvisation, or ad lib group. The experience can be meditative or spiritually oriented for some individuals. Dancers of all ages are welcome and there typically is no talking during the dance. Dance opening circle begins somewhere between 6:30 to 8 PM depending upon the location (indoors tends to be 7:30-8 PM) and time of year. Sometimes there is yoga or another optional warm up prior to opening circle. Donations of $5-20 recommended, but usually not required. No one will be refused for lack of funds. Funds go towards the costs of holding weekly dances, a contact improvisation scholarship fund, or charitable donations rather than the volunteer organizers. Dance occurs indoors at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh (usually Founders Hall, but sometimes Main Sanctuary) or sometimes at The Portal HQ. Dance sometimes occurs outdoors at Pullen Park (across the street from the aquatic center), Raleigh Rose Garden, Wooten Meadow Park, Dorothea Dix Park (Big Field or Spring Hill Park & Ride), or other outdoor locations. Dance sometimes occurs on Fridays instead of Thursdays. Dance when outdoors is weather dependent, but will usually occur during light rain. See Raleigh Ecstatic Dance Facebook group (or if need ask about the ecstatic dance community private Discord server) on the event day for latest information on exact location and times since they can change last minute. RDU Zouk Thursday Social<br> 8:00 pm - 11:00 pmRDU Zouk hosts a Thursday social from 9-11 pm. This is often preceded by workshops or classes from 8-9 pm or 7-9 pm at additional charge. The cost is typically $8 social only, $15 class only, $20 class and social, or $65 class and social 4 week series. Sometimes there is a practica from 8-9 pm if there are no classes that is included in the admit, but when there are classes it would be extra.
